Cheapest Bulk SMS in Kenya: 2026 Price Comparison

Bulk SMS in Kenya costs roughly KES 0.20 to 0.80 per message in 2026. The range is wide because "cheap" means different things depending on your volume, the networks you reach, and whether the messages actually get delivered. Here is how the pricing really works, and how to pay less without getting burned.

How bulk SMS is priced in Kenya

Almost every provider charges per SMS, where one SMS is 160 characters. Longer messages are split into parts and billed per part, so a 300-character message costs two SMS. On top of the per-message rate, you usually pay a one-off fee for a custom sender ID, the branded name recipients see.

Three things move the price:

  • Volume. The more you buy, the lower the per-SMS rate. This is the single biggest lever.
  • Message type. Promotional rates are often lower than transactional (OTP) rates on some providers.
  • Delivery quality. The cheapest routes are sometimes the least reliable, which costs you more in failed messages.

Typical Kenyan rates in 2026

Monthly volumeTypical rate
Under 10,000KES 0.40 - 0.80
10,000 - 100,000KES 0.30 - 0.50
100,000+KES 0.20 - 0.35

Some resellers advertise headline rates as low as KES 0.20. Those can be genuine at high volume, but always confirm they cover all three networks and come with real delivery reports before you commit.

Caution

A rock-bottom price means nothing if messages do not arrive. Ask any provider for their delivery rate on Safaricom specifically, and test with your own numbers before you buy a large bundle.

How to get the cheapest rate that still delivers

  1. Buy in volume. Consolidate your sending with one provider to reach the next price tier.
  2. Pay as you go. Avoid monthly minimums and contracts. You should only pay for messages you send.
  3. Insist on delivery reports. If you cannot see what landed, you cannot tell cheap from unreliable.
  4. Use one balance for all networks. Separate Safaricom and Airtel accounts waste credit and time.

What PESA RAILS charges

We publish our rates rather than hide them behind a quote. You pay KES 0.50 per SMS up to 5,000 messages, KES 0.35 from 5,001 to 50,000, and KES 0.30 above that, across Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom, from one prepaid balance you top up with M-Pesa. A custom sender ID is a one-off KES 7,000.

We are not trying to be the absolute cheapest headline number. We are trying to be the best value: transparent pricing, a real API and SDK, delivery reports on every message, and a sender ID live in 48 hours. For most businesses that combination is cheaper in practice than a 0.20 rate with poor delivery and no tooling.
