How to Get an SMS Sender ID in Kenya (2026 Step-by-Step)
A sender ID is the name people see when your SMS arrives, like PESARAILS or MYSHOP, instead of a random number. It is what makes a message look legitimate. Here is exactly how to register one in Kenya, what it costs, and how long it takes.
Why you need a sender ID
Messages from a recognised brand name get read and trusted. Messages from an unknown number get ignored or reported as spam. For any business sending OTPs, receipts, or campaigns, a branded sender ID is not optional, it is the difference between being seen and being blocked.
What you need to register one
Registration goes through a licensed provider, who submits your request to Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. You need three things:
- The fee. A one-off charge, typically KES 5,000 to 15,000 depending on the provider. With PESA RAILS it is KES 7,000, paid once with M-Pesa.
- Proof of business. Your certificate of incorporation, because the networks require that the brand name is actually yours.
- Your chosen name. Up to 11 characters, no spaces. Pick something short and recognisable.
How long it takes
Turnaround depends on the networks, and estimates vary from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. With a complete application, most sender IDs are approved within 48 hours, and at most around four days. Submitting the right documents the first time is the biggest factor in getting approved fast.
The rules you must follow
- It must be your brand. Names that impersonate another company are rejected.
- 11 characters maximum. Longer names are not allowed.
- Promotional sending hours. Marketing messages are restricted to set hours. OTPs and transactional alerts can be sent any time.
Register the exact name your customers already know you by. Consistency between your sender ID, your brand, and your message content is what keeps you out of the spam folder.
Getting started
With PESA RAILS, you pay the fee and upload your documents in the dashboard, pick your name, and we handle the submission to all three networks. The moment it is approved, you can send. See the step-by-step on getting a sender ID.
